Blessed are those who ….

In today’s Gospel, we have the amazing Beatitudes. Some say that these are the most powerful and deep teachings of Christ, even more fundamental than miracles and forgiveness and love.

It’s hard for me to say.

But I certainly can relate to mourning, hungering for righteousness, being poor in spirit, and so on. I recognize that every person goes through this, each with his or her own unique journey.

In each of the eight statements, we tend to skip over that first word: blessed.

I am truly blessed, in many ways, for many things. Why is it so hard to be grateful for that?
