Being humble is easy to talk about, but not to do.
My child, conduct your affairs with humility,
Sirach 3:17-20
and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
and you will find favor with God.
For great is the power of the Lord;
by the humble He is glorified.
The way I think about it, humility isn’t about bargaining with God so that I can get the Big Payout at the end of my life. That isn’t humility all.
Instead, I’m thinking that it’s about doing the right thing just because it’s an expression of love.
I’ve actually seen this in action in my own life: fake humility and modesty versus gentle and loving humility. It’s pretty clear that most everyone can tell the difference.
Certainly God sees it too, right? He knows what’s in your heart better than anyone can.
When you are invited,
Luke 14:10
go and take the lowest place
so that when the host comes to you he may say,
‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’
