Coming of the Holy Spirit

Today, with great joy, we focus on the Spirit that Jesus said the Father would send.

“I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.”

John 14:26

Without the Holy Spirit, Jesus is just a remembered character from a story 2000 years old. Compelling, yes, but a lot less active.

My personal challenge is to let the Spirit speak to me and through me. It’s really hard, because I tend to operate in concrete terms.

Stuff I can see and touch.

But the Spirit doesn’t speak to me that way. It’s not a booming voice from the clouds.

It’s more like that faint whisper.

And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

1 Kings 19:11-13

Lord, help me to hear the whisper.
