I’m wondering about the strength of my faith, and of Our Faith – the Church. There are a lot of Catholics talking about the post-Christian society, the ills of Vatican II, and so on.

It’s so easy to get sucked in by this.

“When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Come to my aid!

There are times when my faith falters.

R. Lord, come to my aid!
The LORD heard my cry.
He drew me out of the pit of destruction,
 out of the mud of the swamp;
he set my feet upon a crag;
 he made firm my steps.
R. Lord, come to my aid!

Psalm 40:14b, 40:3

Certainly there are times when I’m feeling tested by uncertainty and doubts. Perhaps not directly my faith in God, exactly, but more about how much I can trust Him to protect me through my trials.

We are filled with joy

In today’s psalm, we sing:

The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy!

It’s quite easy for me to lose my optimism and hope, but we have an advantage: We know that God’s goodness prevails in the end!

The hard thing about this is that my choices still matter, in saving my own soul and the souls around me. Although we are confident that God and the entire cohort of heaven will defeat Satan in the end, I don’t know that I will be one of that cohort.

Defend us in battle

Today’s second reading conveys a powerful image:

Brothers and sisters:
Indeed the word of God is living and effective,
sharper than any two-edged sword,
penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow,
and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.
No creature is concealed from him,
but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him
to whom we must render an account.

As we near the end of our Church year, we’re looking more and more at the four final things: Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell.
