Body and Blood

What a fabulous sending forth after the Easter season! Today we are celebrating the Solemnity of what Christ gave us in the Last Supper.

His body and His blood, shed for the salvation of every person in all of humanity.

On Holy Thursday we remembered that meal, but today I’m thinking about the implication of His gifts.

Would I be willing to sacrifice myself even for those I love? I hope I’m not tested, because I fear I’d fail.

And it’s not a gift which was given once. It’s given every time I participate in our Holy Mass.

It’s happening again. I’m not just remembering something which happened 20 centuries ago.

If someone makes the supreme sacrifice for my soul right now, what’s my appropriate response? To fall on my knees and give my life to Him.

Blood is poured and flesh is broken,
Yet in either wondrous token
Christ entire we know to be.

Lauda Sion, the sequence for today’s celebration
